On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique print “St Clements Eastcheap. United with St Martin Orgars. / Situated on the East of St Clements Lane, its foundation is thought to be very ancient but the earliest date from the records is March 1 1309, when Will de Northwell was presented as Rector. The Church partook of the common fate in 1666 and was rebuilt 1685. The Rector J Farrer M.A. succeeded in 1803 Walter Kerrick M.A. / St Martin Orgars of the which the Steeple and part of the nave remained was saved in the great fire, has been since leased to French Protestants with the consent of the Episcopacy & Parliament, is now repaired and used for Divine Service.” A view of the church on the east side of St Clement’s Lane; a man with a wheelbarrow passes church, a horse and cart wait outside. DATE PRINTED: 1812SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 20.5 x 22.5 cm, 8 x 9 inches (large) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Etched by Joseph Skelton (1783-1871) from a drawing by the London artist John Coney (1786-1833).PROVENANCE: A plate published in ‘Ecclesiastical Architecture of London, being a complete series of views of the Churches in the Metropolis.’ The series competently illustrates the golden age of London church building and is an important record due to the demolitions and destruction of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It included 123 plates, with notes on each plate by Charles Clarke. This was supplemented by an article on the Temple Church.TYPE: Antique copper plate etching and engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Very good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: St Clement Eastcheap is a Church of England parish church in Candlewick Ward of the City of London. It is located on Clement’s Lane, off King William Street and close to London Bridge and the River Thames. Clement was a disciple of St Peter the Apostle and was ordained as Bishop of Rome in the year 93 AD. By legend, Clement was martyred by being tied to an anchor and thrown into the Black Sea, which led to his adoption as a patron saint of sailors. The dedication to St Clement is unusual in London, with only one other ancient church there dedicated to this saint, namely St Clement Danes, Westminster.
