eBay As I got older I didn’t care much for the riding position, or geometry if you will, of road bikes. I just wasn’t comfortable having to bend over so far while riding and so I did most of my riding on mountain bikes rather than road bikes. In 2013 I wanted a new mountain bike that would actually be a road bike for me, and that’s when I learned about the Trek Superfly. At 21 pounds (I believe) it was the same weight as my old 1984 Colnago Arabesque. I was impressed. I’ve never been a mountain biker, per se. In 2018 we moved to Joshua Tree where, unfortunately, there are few bike lanes. I seemed to be happier spending time in the yards growing cactus than riding bicycles. But I did find what I felt was a safe ride around the east and the north end of town, with a stop at Black Rock campground in Joshua Tree before heading home. In August of 2020 I was 73 years old and still felt comfortable enough to get out and ride once in a while. But on August 19th I leaned into a turn and the rear tire slid out from under me, and I ended up on the ground with a shattered hip. Six months later the head surgeon admitted the surgery should have been done differently. I’ve never been able to ride since, and I have constant pain in the right leg. I couldn’t even do rehab because the right leg doesn’t have enough muscle left for me to even be able to do what rehab requires. I’ve kept both bikes since the crash simply because I like looking at them. In the several years, however, I’ve offered them to family members as I would like them to stay in the family. My family members are great people, and they love me. And I know why they won’t accept my bicycles. They make too much money, and they think that I should sell the bikes because they think I could use the money. I may not have as much money as they do, but I have enough money and I have no debt. It’s just strange to me that they don’t want to take the bikes for their grandkids. I have no grandchildren of my own. I’ve kept both bikes for almost 4 years since the accident, and there’s just no way I can ride. The information below is from Trek, not me. I imagine the equipment is correct, except that I’ve never cared for SRAM equipment. I made the decision in 2014 to go ahead with their newest stuff thinking they’ve probably improved a lot. But the shifting just wasn’t as smooth as my old Shimano and so sometime in 2014, or maybe 2015, I had it all switched out for Shimano XTR. The shifting is nicer, no doubt about it. The other thing I didn’t care for was that Gary Fisher had been hired by Trek to help design this bike after Trek had bought him out. How did they acknowledge that? The acknowledged it by putting a small gf on the seat tube. I had a custom place make me a large Gary Fisher decal to put over the name Trek. If you’ll look you can see the faint Trek name behind Gary Fisher. The frame size is for a person 5’ 9”. If you’d like me to measure something please let me know. Info from Trek: For 2013 Trek has gone back to the drawing board with their flagship 29er race bike, re-engineering it from the ground up to build their lightest, fastest and smoothest hardtail ever. Born from the “Apollo” project, the result of 2 independent design teams intensive R&D is the stunning Superfly SL frame that has dropped almost 25% in weight compared to last year’s frame, coming in at just 896 grams. There’s a whole host of neat new features too: Net Molded head tube, internal cable routing, MicroTruss external routing option, 142 x 12 mm thru-axle, carbon fiber seat clamp and the somewhat hidden Roll Wrap seat tube junction. It all adds up to a seriously high quality mountain bike that also happens to be ridiculously light too. The new SL frame features the latest blend of “OCLV Mountain” Carbon Fiber that is specific to Trek’s MTB lineup. This type of carbon is designed to withstand impact damage more readily than the carbon used on their road bikes, and is a more durable material that is made to stand up to the rigors of regular mountain biking. Trek is continuing with their industry leading BB95 press fit bottom bracket system, that utilizes Net Molding for the BB shell to allow the bearings to be directly dropped in without any need for alloy inserts or additional machining. The “95” stands for 95mm wide (compared to the usual 68mm BB shells that most other companies use) and is a simple way of maximizing stiffness around the crucial BB area so that all of your pedaling efforts are directed straight to the rear tire. New for 2013 is the same technology for the headset. Instead of press-in cups like traditional headsets, Trek is able to mold their carbon to such high tolerances that the bearings simply drop directly into the frame. Lighter, stiffer and simpler, and a contributor to the low overall frame weight. You’ll also notice that the Superfly SL frame gets a 142x12mm rear dropout for maximum lateral rigidity. Although it might seem a little odd on such a lightweight race bike, the Trek World Racing team came to the conclusion that the benefits in wheel stiffness and handling were too hard to ignore. Of course you can always fit a regular 135mm quick release wheel with the Closed Convert dropout system that allows you to swap in quick release chips. Gracing the front of the SL Superfly frame is a G2 equipped RockShox SID World Cup XX fork that uses a full carbon Tapered steerer/crown interface to lower weight. Like every Trek 29er, the SID gets a custom 51mm offset crown to maintain the G2 geometry system that provides improved handling over regular 29er forks. A hydraulic remote lockout activates the Blackbox Motion Control damper so you can adjust the suspension on the fly without having to take your hands off the grips. With 100mm of travel, a QR15 Maxle Lite and a Solo Air spring, the SID fork is not only one of the lightest 29er forks on the market, but also one of the most adjustable. The Pro SL Superfly comes decked out with the who’s who of top end parts, including a full SRAM XX group set with the new World Cup disc brakes. The 2×10 drivetrain has revolutionized the XC racing circuit, with its intensely machined and shaped tooth profiles for the chain ring sand cassette that allow for precise shifting even under load. The XX cassette is machined out of a single block of steel, that allows for Titanium-like weight, with the teeth durability of steel. Carbon crank arms not only look pretty, but they’re also super stiff for helping lay the power down. Trek has selected the top XXX Bontrager component line for the carbon-railed saddle, carbon seat post, stem and carbon bar to keep weight feathery while maintaining plenty of vibration dampening to keep the ride smooth.Stepping up from last year’s offerings, Bontrager has also gone back to the drawing board and has come out with a new lightweight Race X Lite 29er wheel set that features DT Swiss hubs, straight pull spokes and new lighter Scandium rims. Wrapped with the Team Issue versions of the super fast 29-0 tires, every inch of the Superfly Pro SL screams speed and light weight.
