Absolutely stunning color and shadowing — similar to works by Corot. Comparet studied in Paris and those influences are clear in this standout work. It’s unclear where this was painted as Comparet traveled extensively. He did several pieces on the Platte River, but it could also be Colorado or Taos. It looks very similar to Hudson River School artworks as well. Signed lower left, partially obscured. Dates around 1880. We have had it custom framed in a lovely molding with cream liner. A fantastic antique work.•Certification: Our Gallery Certificate of Authenticity is included for items that sell for over $500. For all other items, our Certificate of Authenticity is available for purchase. •Condition: Very good. Minor crazing. New frame is pristine. •Measurements: The painting is approx 9″x12″ and it is approx 16″x19″ framed.•About the Artist: Known as a painter of tonalist landscapes, Alexis Comparet was born in South Bend, Indiana, and traveled widely. He studied with Benjamin Constant in Paris in 1874 and with early Colorado painter Harvey Young. In 1879, he was in New Mexico for a brief time and then returned to his home state of Colorado to teach at the Colorado Academy of Design, which was short lived. One of his collectors was Sarah Bernhardt who introduced him to her troupe when she was performing in Denver. In 1906, he moved to San Diego, California and later changed his name to Compera. He died at Coronado Beach. His work can be found at the Colorado State Museum.
