SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Bob Shaw was born in 1931 in Belfast, Ireland and he died in 1996 in England. He learned about science fiction when he was eleven years old when he read an A.E. van Vogt short story. During World War II American troops passed through Northern Ireland and often left their used science fiction magazine at Smithfield Market, where they were available for locals (including Bob Shaw). He attended Belfast College of Technology. In 1950 he joined the group Irish Fandom, which also included another Northern Irish science fiction writer James White and met at the house of Walt Willis on Upper Newtownards Road, Belfast. The group was influential in the early history of science fiction fandom and produced fanzines Hyphen and Slant, to both of which Shaw contributed material. Shaw acquired the nickname “BoSh” during this period. His first professional science fiction short story was published in 1954, followed by several others. He and his first wife Sadie and their children move to Canada and lived there from 1956 through 1958. His famous novel ORBITSVILLE contains scenes wherein limitless grasslands are described and which may have come from Shaw’s experience in Canada. Shaw was originally trained as a structural engineer and worked as an aircraft designer for Short and Harland. He also worked as a science correspondent to The Bellfast Telegraph and as a publicity officer for Vickers Shipbuilding. He started to writee full time in 1975. Shaw had nearly lost his sight through illness, and suffered migraine-induced visual disturbances throughout his life. These, and references to eyes and vision, appear as a theme in some of his works. He was known as a drinker, and at one stage considered himself an alcoholic. He was quoted in 1991 as saying: “I write science fiction for people who don’t read a great deal of science fiction.” He married American Nancy Tucker in 1995 and went to the US to live with her, then returned to England in the last months of his life. Shaw died of cancer on 11 February 1996. Bob Shaw was the author of such great and famous books as NIGHT WALK, THE TWO-TIMERS, THE PALACE OF ETERNITY, THE SHADOW OF HEAVEN, ONE MILLION TOMORROWS, GROUND ZERO MAN, OTHER DAYS OTHER EYES, the “Orbitsville” trilogy (consisting of ORBITSVILLE [offered here], ORBITSVILLE DEPARTURE, and ORBITSVILLE JUDGEMENT), A WREATH OF STARS, COSMIC KALEIDOSCOPE, SHIP OF STRANGES, VERTIGO, DAGGER OF THE MIND, A BETTER MANTRAP, the “Land and Overland” trilogy (consisting of THE RAGGED ASTRONAUTS, THE WOODEN SPACESHIPS, and THE FUGITIVE WORLDS, DARK NIGHT IN TOYLAND, and a number of others. The book is tight and square in the usual 1970’s Gollancz burgundy-colored binding with bright gilt lettering on the spine of the book. This may be an unread copy of this book. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is price-clipped, but it is the 1st state dust jacket in that there was no 2nd state dust jacket ever published with 1st editions of ORBITSVILLE. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. This is certainly a collectible copy of this great and famous modern science fiction classic. ORBITSVILLE is widely considered to be one of the greatest hard science fiction novels of all time. It is certainly on a par with RINGWORLD by Larry Niven, MISSION OF GRAVITY by Hal Clement, TAU ZERO by Poul Anderson, THE FOUNTAINS OF PARADISE by Arthur C. Clarke, and MAN PLUS by Frederik Pohl.
