Easton Press leather edition of “Barbara Bush: A Memoir,” one of the SIGNED FIRST EDITION series, published in 1994. Bound in hunter green leather, the book has pea green French moire end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, gold gilding on three edges—in near FINE condition. Barbara Pierce Bush, who lived from 1925–2018, was the first lady of the U.S. from 1989 to 1993, and the wife of GEORGE H.W. BUSH, the 41st president of the United States. She was previously the second lady of the U.S. from 1981 to 1989 where she was often in the presence of NANCY REAGAN and President Ronald Reagan. She founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Among her children are GEORGE W. BUSH, the 43rd president of the United States, and JEB BUSH, the 43rd governor of FLORIDA. She and ABIGAIL ADAMS are the only two women to be the wife of one U.S. president and the mother of another. At the time she became first lady, she was the second oldest woman to hold the position. Bush was generally popular as first lady, recognized for her apolitical grandmotherly image and her common sense. She often joked about her “white hair,” her large pearl necklace, and her “frumpy dress.” Barbara Pierce was born in New York City and grew up in Rye, New York. She met George H. W. Bush at the age of sixteen, and the two married in 1945. She says her children were shocked when she told them that she and their father, George, were both virgins when they married. The couple lived in New Haven, Connecticut, after WW 2, sharing a kitchen and a bathroom with other married students. When George graduated from Yale, they family moved to Texas in 1948, where George was successful in the oil industry. He later began his political career. Bush had six children between 1946 and 1959, and she had to endure the loss of her four-year-old daughter Robin to leukemia in 1953. She lived in Washington, D.C., New York, and China while accompanying her husband in his various political roles in the 1960s and 1970s. She became an active campaigner for her husband whenever he stood for election. Bush became second lady after her husband became vice president in 1981. She took on the role of a social hostess as second lady, holding frequent events at the vice president’s residence, and she traveled to many countries with her husband on his diplomatic missions. In 1974, President Jerry Ford appointed George Bush as Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office to the People’s Republic of China. Bush’s description of their experiences in CHINA in was fascinating. The household staff rode bikes to work from great distances and through all kinds of weather. The Chinese prided themselves —in fact—boasted about having no unemployment. Bush wrote: “Whenever we had Chinese guests, our chef insisted we serve them. To add insult to injury, sea slugs cost $25.00 a pound. When we were served them at banquets, we bit the bullet and ate them.” Later, Mrs. Bush said she enjoyed the role and life in the White House, though her experience as first lady was complicated by her protectiveness over her family and her diagnosis of Graves disease in 1989. She frequently carried out charity work, including her projects to promote literacy and her support for people with AIDS. Among the most prominent of her actions as first lady was the commencement speech she gave at WELLESLEY COLLEGE; it saw considerable publicity and her selection was controversial, but it was widely regarded as a success. She remained active in political campaigning after leaving the White House, as two of her sons ran for office in both gubernatorial and presidential campaigns. In the Preface, Mrs. Bush wrote: “I have loved writing this book and know that it is a story of a life of privilege—privilege of every kind. . .No man, woman, or child ever had a better life. I wrote every word in this book myself from copious diaries about more good meals that I have eaten. . .I also note that we seem to weep a lot in this book. We are an emotional group. A smile, sweetness, even a kind word brings a tear. In a life of privilege there are lots of tears. And to the hero of this book, What can I say? George Bush knows how I feel. He is the hero. Incidentally, at my request, he read the book before it went to print. . .He made no deletions. He added many complimentary adjectives, often added praise for a fellow worker or shared the credit with others. I, of course, gave it to him alone. He is my hero.” In the Prologue, Bush wrote: “January 20, 1993. We were going home. For four extraordinary years, home had been the White House. . .Once we had lost the election to Bill Clinton, I tried to ignore the hurt and turned my mind toward Houston and a new life. George, on the other hand, was presidential until the very last moment. He worried about the staff and where they would go. And he had to cope with the larger problems of Iraq, Somalia, and Bosnia. We had put off the goodbyes to the residence staff and groundskeepers as long as we could but at 10:00, it was time. The hard part was over. I rode to the Capitol with Hillary, and the conversation was relaxed and easy and we talked about the long day ahead. Then came the moment when the mantle was lifted from the back of my superb husband and placed on Bill Clinton’s.
