TAMARA BYKOVA TRACK & FIELD MEDAL – 1983 EUROPEAN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS (GOLD) SPORTS – MEDALS TAMARA BYKOVA TRACK & FIELD MEDALS 1983 EUROPEAN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Tamara Bykova is a Russian former track & field athlete who competed for the Soviet Union mostly during the 1980s, hitting her peak around 1983-85. Taken from Wikipedia: “She is the 1983 World Champion, the 1987 World Championship silver medalist, the 1988 Olympic Bronze medalist, and is a former world record holder, with clearances of 2.03 and 2.04 meters in 1983 and 2.05 meters in 1984. She also won silver medals at the 1982 European Championships, the 1989 and 1991 World Indoor Championships, and three times at the World Cup (1981, 1985 and 1989). How did I came to possess these medals? I’m a STAMP DEALER and many of you (I hope) have seen my listings on eBay over the past 25 years. I’m not a dealer in coins, medals, or general sports memorabilia, though I occasionally dabble in Sports (& non-Sports) cards. But many years ago, I ran into another stamp dealer who had bought these from yet another stamp dealer who had a store in Brooklyn, not very far from that area known as “Little Russia”. The meeting ended with my buying a bag of medals and Soviet-era pins. This bag has been sitting on a shelf in my office for 30 years. Only 2 of these medals actually have the name “Tamara Bykova” engraved on them, and they are both major championships. Online research tells me that for many lesser track meets, medals are not engraved.. In short, those in control of such matters are cheapskates! …and, for the record, many of the “gold” and :silver’ medals have, at most, a thin layer of gold/silver plating. Most have none. There are several listings online of the meets in which she competed and won medals, and these correspond to the medals that were in the bag. My listings tonight are mostly medals from the larger and better-known track meets. I’ll also be listing some medals from smaller meets, and even a few which I can’t identify, including some which are cast/engraved in Russian or Bulgarian. None of these have her name on them, but I have my suspicions. SOME DETAILS This medal is from The 1983 European Indoor Championships Budapest, Hungary. March 5-6. No name on the medal. There is an engraved plug-in on the back, but it only translates as Women’s High Jump. Appears to be a Gold medal. Weight 97 grams. Diameter 59 mm Condition is rough. Some scratches and discolorations. By 1983 she was on fire, and she did win the Gold medal medal at this meet. My auctions focus on U.S. Postal Stationery.
