Victorian Vaseline Opaline Glass Vase Silverplate Egyptian Revival Base Antique Description and Item Information Up for sale is this stunning, decorated Victorian art glass vase with an Egyptian Revival Meriden silverplated base. Please excuse any glare in the photos. The opaline glass vase is a pale greenish aqua color with hand painted decoration which includes a bird and branches. The glass fluoresces under a black light, due to the presence of uranium in the glass (vaseline glass). The rim is scalloped, and it has gold painted decoration. The glass vase fits nicely into the Egyptian Revival style holder, but it is unknown whether the pieces are original to one another. The silverplate holder / base has medallions with ancient Egyptian heads in profile. With the glass inserted into the holder, this item measures approximately 15 1/2 inches tall, 5 7/8 inches long, and 5 7/8 inches wide. The overall weight is 1 pound 5.3 ounces. This would be a lovely addition to a Victorian decor. Identification The glass is unsigned, and the maker is not known; it is possibly by a French manufacturer such as Baccarat, but the exact origin and manufacturer are not known. The silverplate holder is marked beneath, “MERIDEN B CO. No 25.” The exact ages of the glass vase and the silverplate base are not known, but they are antique. This is from the northern California estate collection of an advanced collector of Victorian decorative arts. Condition The glass looks very good overall, with no cracks; there are a few tiny edge nicks (please see example in Photo 8), but the gold paint is over them, so they may be original. The decoration has minor finish wear, and the portion of the glass that inserts into the metal holder has light wear marks. The interior bottom has minor soiling from use. The silverplate base has no breaks. It is bright and shiny overall, with fine scratches; there is very minor tarnishing. Someone scratched a small marking beneath, as shown in Photo 6. This may have been replated at some point. As noted above, the metal base may not original to the glass vase, but they fit together nicely.
